A dewatering sock is a geotextile filtration product designed to attach directly to a discharge hose or pipe and filter sediment, silt, debris, and other suspended pollutants from discharged water. Also called a dewatering filter sock, pipe sock, or drain filter sock, it provides a simple solution for construction dewatering, sediment control, stormwater management, and other water filtration applications.

A dewatering filter sock attaches to the end of a discharge hose or pipe. As sediment-laden water flows into the sock, the nonwoven geotextile fabric captures sediment and debris while allowing filtered water to pass through the material.

Dewatering socks are used for filtration, construction dewatering, sump pump-outs, dredging, sediment removal, stormwater management, and other applications where sediment needs to be removed from discharged water. Their compact design makes them especially useful for smaller-scale dewatering projects and locations where space is limited.

Dewatering filter socks can be implemented as a Stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) to help filter sediment from water before it leaves a construction or project site.  Dewatering socks can also be incorporated into a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) as a sediment-filtration and discharge-control measure.

Dewatering filter socks are designed for quick installation. Secure one end of the sock, position the open end around the discharge hose or pipe, place a clamp over the sock and hose, tighten the connection, and then begin water flow. The connection should be checked during operation to ensure the sock remains securely attached.

Both products use geotextile filtration to remove sediment from discharged water, but they are suited to different applications. Dewatering socks are compact and attach directly to a discharge pipe or hose, making them a good option for smaller-scale projects. Dewatering bags provide greater filtration area and sediment-holding capacity, making them better suited for higher flows or applications with larger amounts of sediment.
