The best anchor depends on the bottom or soil conditions, water depth, current velocity, tides, waves, wind, barrier type, and expected loads. Fluke, pyramid, and mushroom anchors are generally used for in-water anchoring, while ground and auger anchors are designed to secure floating barriers to shore or land. Proper anchor selection, spacing, and placement are critical because the anchoring system helps keep a turbidity curtain, oil containment boom, seaweed barrier, or debris boom in its intended position. The anchor design should consider bottom conditions, depth, tides, current, wind, and marine traffic.

Each anchor style provides holding power in a different way:

  • Fluke Anchor Kit: Uses flukes that dig into the bottom and is commonly suited to seabeds where the anchor can penetrate and develop holding power.
  • Pyramid Anchor Kit: Relies heavily on its weight and compact shape to resist movement and can be useful where a weighted marine anchor is preferred.
  • Mushroom Anchor Kit: Uses a broad, weighted shape that rests on or settles into the bottom and is commonly considered for softer bottom conditions and more permanent or longer-duration positioning.
  • Ground Anchor Kit: Secures a boom or barrier to land rather than the water bottom and is useful at shorelines, banks, beaches, or other terrestrial termination points.
  • Auger Anchor Kit: Screws into soil to create a secure land-based anchoring point and is commonly used where a turbidity curtain or containment boom terminates at shore.

Fluke, Pyramid, Auger, and Mushroom Anchors as anchoring options for floating barrier systems, while ground augers are a common solution for land anchoring.

Anchor selection should be based on the installation environment rather than choosing one anchor for every project. A Fluke Anchor may be appropriate where the bottom allows the anchor to dig in and develop strong holding power. A Pyramid Anchor can be considered where a compact weighted anchor is desirable. A Mushroom Anchor may be better suited to softer bottoms or applications where weight and bottom contact provide the required holding force. Ground and Auger Anchors are intended for shoreline anchoring, such as securing the ends of a turbidity curtain or oil boom to a riverbank, beach, pond edge, or construction site.

For Type 2 and Type 3 turbidity curtains in moving water, we recommend water anchoring systems, while land anchors are commonly used where the barrier terminates on shore. Final anchor size, type, quantity, and spacing should always be determined from actual site conditions.

Proper anchoring helps prevent a floating barrier from drifting, shifting out of position, submerging, or experiencing excessive loads from currents, waves, wind, and changing tides and is one of the most important factors in successful barrier performance because the correct anchor pattern can reduce and redistribute forces placed on the barrier. Water anchors are commonly required for Type 2 and Type 3 turbidity curtains used in moving water.

The number and spacing of anchors depend on barrier length, water depth, current speed, wind, wave action, tides, bottom conditions, barrier configuration, and the loads expected at the site. There is no single anchor spacing that is correct for every installation.

Anchoring frequency and weight should be selected according to site conditions, and its Type 2 turbidity curtain guidance references anchor points at approximately 50-foot intervals while emphasizing that actual requirements depend on the project.

Many anchor systems can be configured for multiple types of floating environmental barriers, including turbidity curtains, oil containment booms, seaweed or Sargassum barriers, debris booms, and permanent boom systems. However, the appropriate anchor type and holding capacity depend on the loads generated by the specific barrier and site. Larger barriers, stronger currents, waves, accumulated debris, or seaweed can substantially increase loading, so the complete anchoring system should be sized for the application rather than selected only by barrier length.
