Staked Silt Fence

Control silt and stormwater runoff on your job site with the affordable and efficient Triton Staked Silt Barrier. When properly installed, the impermeable PVC material stops the spread of sediment and redirects water flow. It also meets DOT requirements for sediment and erosion control in water depths less than 30 inches.

Erosion Control Resources

A staked silt fence is a temporary erosion and sediment control barrier made from permeable geotextile fabric supported by stakes. It is installed across areas of stormwater sheet flow to slow runoff, filter water, and capture suspended soil and sediment before it leaves a construction site or disturbed area. Staked silt fence is commonly used as a Best Management Practice (BMP) for construction sites, roadwork, grading projects, landscaping, and other areas where soil disturbance can contribute to sediment-laden runoff.

Coir logs, also known as coconut fiber logs or coir wattles, are biodegradable erosion-control products made from natural coconut fibers. They are commonly installed along shorelines, streambanks, slopes, drainage channels, wetlands, and disturbed soil areas to slow runoff, trap sediment, reduce soil erosion, and provide temporary stabilization while vegetation becomes established. Because coir gradually biodegrades, it can be especially useful for environmentally sensitive restoration and revegetation projects.

A staked silt fence is generally a better choice when the primary goal is to intercept sediment-laden sheet flow around the perimeter of a construction or disturbed-soil area. The permeable fabric allows water to pass through while helping retain sediment.

A coir log is often better suited for applications requiring surface stabilization, runoff reduction, shoreline protection, streambank restoration, or support for vegetation establishment. Coir logs conform to the ground and can be placed across slopes or along waterways to slow water and reduce erosion.

Some projects can benefit from using both products together as part of a larger erosion and sediment control plan.

Staked silt fence and coir logs are commonly used for construction erosion control, stormwater management, road and highway projects, slope stabilization, shoreline restoration, streambank protection, landscaping, wetland restoration, wildfire recovery, and disturbed-soil stabilization. The appropriate product depends on site slope, expected runoff, soil conditions, sediment load, water exposure, and project duration.

Proper installation is critical for both products. Staked silt fence should be installed along site contours and securely trenched or embedded into the soil so stormwater cannot easily flow underneath the fabric. Stakes must be adequately supported, and the fence should be positioned to intercept sheet flow rather than concentrated high-velocity water.

Coir logs should be placed in direct contact with the soil and securely anchored with stakes so water cannot undermine or move the log. On slopes, shorelines, or drainage areas, proper contour placement helps slow runoff and retain soil. Both systems should be inspected regularly, particularly after heavy rain or storm events, and accumulated sediment or damaged sections should be addressed as needed.
