Overview

Type 3 Turbidity Curtains: Heavy-Duty, Permeable and DOT Permeable Solutions

Type 3 Turbidity Curtains are high-strength floating sediment control barriers designed to help contain silt, turbidity, suspended sediment and displaced particles during demanding marine and in-water construction projects. Enviro-USA™ offers three Type 3 configurations: Type 3 Heavy-Duty (HD) Turbidity Curtain, Type 3 Heavy-Duty Permeable Turbidity Curtain and Type 3 DOT Permeable Turbidity Curtain. Each configuration is designed around different project requirements while providing a durable barrier for controlling sediment movement in challenging water conditions.

Type 3 systems are suited for marine environment applications including dredging, shoreline restoration and marine construction, particularly where currents, waves and other natural forces require a stronger sediment-control system. Enviro-USA™’s Type 3 product information describes these curtains as solutions for demanding conditions with flows up to 3 knots, while noting that current, wind, waves and project location can affect performance and may require additional anchoring, engineering or customization.

A Type 3 Turbidity Curtain is a heavy-duty floating sediment control barrier designed to help contain silt, suspended sediment, turbidity, and displaced particles in demanding marine and construction environments. Type 3 Turbidity Curtains are commonly used for dredging, shoreline restoration, marine construction, and other in-water projects where stronger currents, waves, or challenging site conditions require a higher-strength containment system. Enviro-USA™ Type 3 Heavy-Duty systems are designed for demanding conditions with water flows up to 3 knots, depending on site conditions and system configuration.

The primary differences between Type 3 Turbidity Curtain configurations are their fabric, flotation, structural components, and permeability.

  • Type 3 Heavy-Duty Turbidity Curtain uses 22 oz. PVC-coated polyester fabric, 12-inch square foam-filled flotation, dual 5/16-inch galvanized steel top tension cables, a 3/8-inch galvanized steel ballast chain, and ASTM Universal Slide connectors.
  • Type 3 Heavy-Duty Permeable Curtain adds monofilament to the PVC-coated polyester fabric to create a permeable configuration while maintaining heavy-duty structural components.
  • Type 3 DOT Permeable Turbidity Curtain uses 18 oz. PVC-coated polyester with monofilament, 8-inch square foam-filled flotation, a 5/16-inch vinyl-sheathed galvanized steel tension cable, a 5/16-inch galvanized steel ballast chain, grommet connectors, and anchor points every 50 feet with top and bottom stress plates.

Type 3 Turbidity Curtains can be configured in different lengths and skirt draft depths to accommodate project-specific water depths and site conditions. Enviro-USA™ Type 3 Heavy-Duty and Heavy-Duty Permeable curtains are available in standard 50-foot sections, with custom lengths also available. Standard skirt depth is 5 feet, with depths ranging from 3 feet to 100 feet, available by request.

The Type 3 DOT Permeable Turbidity Curtain is available in 50-foot and 100-foot lengths, with a standard 5-foot skirt and optional skirt depths from 3 feet to 20 feet, by request. Because current, wind, waves, water depth, and site location can affect curtain performance, the appropriate size, anchoring system, and configuration should be selected based on the specific project conditions.
